Our Mission

Your right to know. Your freedom to choose.

In today's interconnected world, we interact with countless websites dailyโ€”often without knowing where the companies behind them are based. AltFlag empowers you with transparency and choice.

Whether for political, ethical, economic, or personal reasons, everyone has the right to know the origin of the services they use. Some may want to:

  • Support local businesses by preferring domestic companies
  • Avoid conflict regions due to ethical concerns
  • Diversify their digital footprint across multiple regions
  • Make informed decisions about data privacy and jurisdiction

AltFlag doesn't judge your choicesโ€”it simply gives you the information to make them.

Your browser, your rules.

How AltFlag identifies websites, sources its data, and finds alternatives

How We Identify Websites

When you visit a website, AltFlag runs through a four-step lookup chain โ€” entirely on your device โ€” to find the company's country of origin.

1
Local Database AES-256-GCM encrypted database with 1.5M+ websites, stored locally in your browser. No network request needed.
2
CDN Sync Updates Delta updates fetched periodically from our CDN keep your local database current without full re-downloads.
3
API Lookup opt-in For unknown sites, you can opt-in to query our API. Only the domain name is sent โ€” never your browsing history.
4
Domain Suffix As a final fallback, we infer the country from the domain extension (e.g., .de = Germany, .jp = Japan).

Where Our Data Comes From

We aggregate and cross-reference multiple trusted sources, then run automated verification pipelines weekly.

Domain Rankings Tranco Top 1M, Cisco Umbrella, and Majestic Million provide the most popular domains worldwide.
Wikidata Verified headquarter locations for 100,000+ companies from the open knowledge base.
RDAP Registry Domain registrant data from ICANN's Registration Data Access Protocol for enrichment.
Manual Curation Priority websites are manually verified for accuracy. Community contributions welcome.

How Alternatives Work

When a flagged site is detected, AltFlag suggests services from other countries in the same category.
